The Borden Church Time Capsule

The Borden Church Time Capsule

In the year 2040 how will you be remembered? How would you like to be remembered? What would you like to say to your future self? This is your chance to answer those questions, by placing your precious and unique memories and thoughts in the Borden Church Time Capsule.

A Time Capsule offers a unique opportunity to record in detail a snap-shot in time across a broad range of the Community. Who are we? How do we live? What are our thoughts? These are the questions that fascinate Historians.

What is the story behind the photograph? Twenty-five years may not seem like a long time, especially for those of us who are already well travelled along the road of this mortal coil. But if you consider how much our lives have changed in the past twenty-five years, it becomes easier to imagine how our lives may be changed over the next twenty-five years.

Some of us may not be here when the Capsule is opened in the year 2040! (Do not let this put you off!) Others of us, the children of our Community, will be grown up and may have children of their own. Wherever you sit in the great age spectrum of our Community, in twenty-five years time, your envelope will offer a fascinating insight into you and your life.

I hope that as many people as possible will be in Church on Easter Sunday 5th April 2015, when the capsule will be closed; it would be nice to take a group photo of as many as possible.

God willing, I hope that these same people will be present when the Time Capsule is opened on Easter Sunday 2040.

The Time Capsule Letters; what shall I write about? Write about anything you wish. What is important to you? This could be where you live; where you work; your family; your experiences; what you think about on any subject whatsoever; your relationship with Borden Church (if you have one); How do you spend your daily life? You could include notes from a diary. What do you think you will be doing in twenty-five years time? Write it all down, these are the memories that will be cherished.

Include a photograph Whatever written message you choose to include, will have more impact when people can actually see the person who left the message.

Children’s Participation Younger contributors could include a drawing (or possibly, take dictation from your child, so that their precious thoughts and dreams may be preserved). Needless to say, this is the section of our Community, who will experience the greatest changes over the next twenty-five years. Please encourage and help your children to participate.

The Time Capsule Participation Pack contains:

  • The Time Capsule Envelope Please place your precious items into the Time Capsule Envelope; maximum 2 sheets A4 paper (or equivalent) and 2 photographs. Please return your envelope to Kathy Collins at Borden Church before 5th April 2015.
  • The Time Capsule Reminder Card Please keep your Reminder Card in a safe place. This will remind you when the Capsule is to be opened; so that you may be present at the historic event in the year 2040.

In the year 2040 how will you be remembered?

Some people will find that question frightening, others will find it exciting, speaking personally, I would say a bit of both. This is a unique opportunity, to speak not only to your future self, but also to the people who will comprise the future community right here in Borden.

In my experience, sometimes people vastly underrate their own life experiences and skills. Some people seem to feel that they can have nothing to say that would be of any interest to others, but this is just so untrue.

A good deal is written about the illustrious institutions of the United Kingdom; for example the Government, the Law and the Church. These institutions would not exist without the consensual support of the most important institution of them all; that is, the Men and Women who live and work together here in Borden and beyond and who between them bind the entire fabric of our society together.

This Time Capsule will provide an important social snap-shot in time from the year 2015. This Time Capsule is the story of us; written by us.

The proceeds from the Time Capsule will be donated in full to the Borden Church Development Project

The Borden Church Time Capsule initiative is sponsored by North Kent Joinery Limited
