Hinges Farm Barn Fire 1928
This article appeared in the Gazette and Times 29 September 1988 under the section entitled ‘Another glimpse at our history.’
The article reads “These old photographs capture the drama of a barn fire at Borden. And perhaps they will stir a few memories. The fire happened at Hinge’s Farm in 1928 and was caused by sparks off a tar boiler being used by a roadworks crew.
The pictures were taken by Henry Harlow — affectionately referred to as Old Pop Harlow. He was a popular figure in the village and used to run dances at Carmel Hall before the war. The photographs are now treasured possessions of his daughter who lived with her family in Borden Lane.
She married and moved north with her husband Harry Galpin in the 1940s.
The couple now live in York and they lent us the photographs during a recent visit to this area.
And to satisfy your curiosity, the fire was extinguished in time to save the barn. It still stands today but has been converted into flats.”
