Notes on Deeds of Wrens Farm
Notes on deeds of Wrens Farm found in attic of Wrens House
A pile of old documents some in poor condition damaged by water at some stage.
Wrens House is modern but incorporates a much smaller 1930s house which was the home of the Wrens Farm manager.
In 1867 the Leigh Pemberton family, Lord Kingsdown of Torry Hill owned Wrens Farm as part of his estates.
Wrens Farm lay partly in Borden & partly in Tunstall.
In his will of 1867 Lord Kingsdown left the 120 acre farm to Rev. Wright of Frinsted in trust for his nephew Edward Leigh Pemberton & his nephew’s infant sons Robert & Wilfred. He also left them 50 acres known as Bland Land & 7 acre Tunstall meadow & 5 cottages in Bredgar & Borden in the occupation of Richard, Charles & William Goatham.
Large vellum map undated possibly 1867 Wrens Farm is coloured red & the farm buildings are clear to see behind the old house. The next house then along Sutton Baron Road was Sutton Baron. The surrounding lands belonged to Miss Hales, William Elvy, Thomas Read & William Cobb.
There is a small linen map undated probably late 19th century same area of land. Still no building between Wrens Farm House & Sutton Baron. Surrounding land owned by T. Cornwell & Lumley Webb.
Abstract of title of Robert Leigh Pemberton to Wrens Farm
1917 Frank Triplow bought the farm with a mortgage
There is a 1933 conveyance with map but no Wrens House (previously called Wrens Cottage) marked on it. This was perhaps the year it was built.
Title of Philip Woodman to Wrens Farm 1933
East Kent Gazette article 1968 (Jan or Feb)
Philip Woodman died 1967 left nearly half his £90,000 estate to his housekeeper Rose Crew. Left her the old farm house & farm. The rest of his estate he left to his farm foreman Fred Pratt Both had worked for him for many years. Fred had lived in Wrens Cottage (now = Wrens House)
Rose Crew did not want to continue to live in the old house. She sold it to Fred in 1969 & bought a new house in nearby Sterling Road.
She also sold the 143 acre farm & Firs Farm Bredgar to Hinges.
