WW2 German Airmen crash in Borden
On 14th September 1940, two German airmen were shot down and crashed at Munsgrove Lane, though it was reported they crashed in Key Street.
They were flying a ME Bf110C-4 with 7./ZG76 squadron, when they were hit by anti-arcraft fire. They both bailed out, but were too low to survive.
The two Germans were:
1) Unteroffizier (Pilot) Georg Alfred Bierling, born on 8th September 1914 in Hamburg. He is buried in plot 4 row 4 grave 54,
2) Unteroffizier (Observer) Friedrich Wilhelm Kurella, born on 21 April 1915 in Lucka, Germany. He is buried in plot 4 row 4 grave 55.
They were initially buried in Borden churchyard and in the 1960s an arrangement between the UK and German government, they were re-interred in Cannock Chase German Military Cemetery, together with 61 other German airmen who lost their lives in Swale.
